Discharge Printing. 11-08-2014

Discharge Printing.

Discharge print is the best way to print light colors on a dark background fabric without making the printing too thick. For a regular print on dark fabric there is always a base of at least 2 layers of plastisol needed, otherwise the colors cannot stick out much. If the base is too thick the print will have brilliant colors but the feel is not very comfortable. Especially during high humidity it feels like a plastic sticker on a t-shirt.

In order to avoid this from happening, discharge printing has been developed as a great fix here.

Discharge printing is a printing type based on bleach. A not insignificant amount of chloride is added to the printing ink. This way the original fabric color can be bleached away where the new lighter color is needed. Then mixed with water based material the discharge after printing will feel like the actual fabric dye. No thick layers and the fabrics are still breathable.

The bleaching works the following way. The ink is mixed with the chloride agent. When printed the effects first are not visible. Just after the heater dries the print the light colors will appear.

Pros:

- works on all cotton fabrics

- light colors can be printed on dark fabric

- does include white color

- Supports CMYK raster print

- Color not likely to fade

- can be mixed with water based ink

Cons:

- White is never 100% white. White color will be according to original fabric yarn color. Mostly natural cotton beige.

- Needs lots of attention during printing.

- Chemical reaction can happen too quick or too slow depending on the temperature and humidity of the printing environment.

- High chance errors might occur.
