Plastisol Printing
Plastisol ink is a type of textile printing ink. Plastisol is the most common way to print all kinds of garments. Plastisol is a PVC based paint which is printed on top of the fabric. By using a hardener, the gel like printing material becomes stiff. After printing, the color needs to be dried otherwise the color will wash off. Suggested drying temperatures are around 180C. Plastisol can almost be printed on any type of surface. The paint is always on top of the material and does not rinse into the fabric. This gives the material a certain feeling as if a printed piece of rubber has been glued on top of the fabrics. Because of this the fabric under the printed logo is not breathable depending on the thickness of the print.
Plastisol can also be used on darker material. It’s very common the printer will make a white base layer before additional colors are being printed. This will enhance the colors and clarity of raster print for all other layers on top. The use of the right hardener influences the lifespan of a Plastisol print a lot. If the hardener is too little the color is not drying enough, so edges will start rubbing off after several washes. If the hardener is too stiff the design will start having cracks after folding.
Another common use is a water thinned type of plastisol.
This can offer an effect coming closer to the water based colors with the advantage that those prints do not fade at all even after many washes. The water thinned type on the other hand looses the ability to print light color on darker material.
